When you begin packing to go on a vacation, you probably think that it’s alright to just put all of your clothes, towels, and toiletries in the same suitcase but in different compartments. This might work if you don’t plan on taking a lot of things with you, but if you plan on being away for more than a couple days, then you might want to consider packing a bit more efficiently. Fortunately, there are a few tips that you can follow so that it’s easier to find the things you’re looking for when you need them.

Plan Ahead

Instead of waiting until the last minute to pack your suitcases and other bags, plan ahead. Get all of the items that you think that you’ll need for the trip, putting them on your bed or on your couch to see if you really need all of your clothes and other items. This is a beneficial tip for kids to follow because they sometimes tend to pack everything in the closet that they have.

Pack Thinner Clothes

If you’re going to the beach or to a location where the climate is warm or you’re traveling when it’s warm, then this is easier to do because you’ll likely wear thinner clothes anyway. Even if you pack pants and long-sleeve shirts, try to pack items that aren’t as bulky. You’ll be able to fit more items in your suitcase while still being comfortable on your vacation. Another option would be to wear the bulkiest item that you want to pack so that it’s still with you but doesn’t take up space in your suitcase. If you’re flying, then a bulky coat might be a good thing to have with you because some planes can get cold in the passenger area.

Pack Wrinkle-Resistant Clothing

When you pack clothes that you know you’ll need as soon as you arrive at your destination, consider packing clothing that is wrinkle-resistant. Nylon and silk are the best options for fewer wrinkles. Instead of laying everything flat in your suitcase, roll your clothes to get more items in your suitcase. You can roll two or three shirts together as well so that you have even more room. This will decrease the number of bags you take and will make it easier to see what you have packed when you open your bags. Put your shoes, pajamas, and underwear in a separate compartment in a bag. If you have your outfits planned out, then roll each outfit together, lining them in a row in your suitcase.

Consider Set or Expandable Suitcase Options

When you start looking for suitcases or bags to take on your vacation, consider expandable options or a set that has more than one bag together. You can put your toiletries in a small bag and use another bag for your children’s clothing if there are more than two with the set. Keep jewelry and hair accessories in separate plastic bags so that they don’t get lost and to keep them from getting tangled with each other. Avoid taking a lot of shoes on your vacation. You only need two to three pairs depending on what you plan to do during your vacation. Pack a good pair of walking shoes, a pair of dress shoes for going out to eat, and a pair of shoes that are easy to slide on and off, especially if you plan on being near water. The last items to pack should be your toiletries. You can leave a lot of items at home because most hotels offer the basics, such as shampoo and conditioner, and will give you more if you ask for them.
